JA Company Program
JA Success Skills focuses on developing students' interpersonal effectiveness. Through an assessment, the students identify the strengths and unique potentials of their interpersonal skills. They examine how their interpersonal skills can be applied in the workplace, and practice their skills in a variety of activities, including mock job interviews. They begin work on a skills portfolio that they can carry with them into the workplace when seeking employment. Eight required, volunteer-led activities.

The key learning objectives listed beside each activity state the skills and knowledge students will gain.

Activity One: Connecting to the Workplace

Through case studies and personal reflection, students explore their beliefs, values, and ethical principles as they relate to the world of work.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • assess their current level of knowledge about school and workplace expectations.
  • analyze ethical dilemmas common in school and the workplace.
  • develop a personal code of ethics.
Activity Two: Communicating Effectively

By analyzing the communication patterns of famous people and others, students discover the importance of effective interpersonal communication in the workplace and in life.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • explore effective and ineffective forms of communication.
  • identify effective interpersonal skills practiced by famous personalities.
  • develop an interpersonal skills plan for the workplace.
Activity Three: Assessing Your Skills

Students view a video of workplace situations and complete a skills assessment .

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • choose an action to take when presented with various workplace situations.
  • recognize effective and ineffective behaviors in the workplace.
Activity Four: Improving Your Skills

Students receive the results of the video assessment they completed in the previous session. They interpret their individual results and receive examples of how they can build on the skills measured in the assessment

Students will be able to:

  • discover their interpersonal effectiveness based on their responses.
  • explore strategies for improving their skills in building rapport, influencing others, and teamwork.
Activity Five: Building Rapport

Students learn techniques for establishing rapport and, through role-playing, practice the skill of building rapport.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • learn techniques for establishing rapport in personal and work situations.
  • practice and recognize effective behaviors for building rapport.
Activity Six: Influencing Others

Through case studies and discussion, students will learn effective ways to influence others in the workplace.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • develop questioning and restating skills.
  • identify effective behaviors for influencing others.
  • recommend specific approaches for influencing others in the workplace.
Activity Seven: Working in Teams

Students apply teamwork skills by performing an activity that requires working together to achieve a common goal.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • recognize that collaboration is necessary to achieve desired results.
  • identify factors that enhance or impede team performance.
  • apply guidelines for effective team performance to their own school or work situations.
Activity Eight: Communicating Your Value

Students learn to communicate their skills and experience using a variety of career preparation tools.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • complete a job application.
  • prepare a work history.
  • write effective letters and resumes.
  • organize their skills portfolios.
Activity Nine: Presenting Yourself

Students will learn techniques for presenting themselves effectively, and they will practice preparing for interviews with peers.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • identify effective presentation techniques.
  • prepare for interviews with potential employers.
  • participate in peer interviews and provide effective feedback.
  • organize their skills portfolios.
Activity Ten: Applying Your Skills

Students practice their interpersonal skills through one-on-one interviews or a panel discussion with community representatives.

Key Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • apply their interpersonal skills in interactions with community representatives.
  • participate in interviews or ask questions of the panelists.
  • receive feedback on their preparation and interview skills.
